History
The Thrift Shop, run by FRIENDS volunteers, first opened in what had once been a general store on Massasoit Road in 1984.
The building itself is a historic landmark, built between 1871 and 1874. serving as a general store for decades and last owned by the Brackett family during the Great Depression.
In 1944 George Morse bought the building, opened ‘The Mitten Factory’ and began making oven mitts, slippers and other quilted items. George’s wife Mary kept a small pet monkey named Rocco that delighted visitors and workers alike.
Eventually the factory closed, and was purchased by Donald and Virginia Delaney. The Delaney’s ran an antique store; and in 1984 they leased the first floor of the store to The Friends of Eastham COA to open a thrift shop.
The Thrift Store building was purchased by the Town of Eastham in 2022 as a historic site. The Town currently leases the bottom of the building to The FRIENDS for the Thrift Store.
